Stations

FromBeijing Chaoyang北京朝阳站

Almost all high-speed trains to Harbin leave from Beijing Chaoyang in the east of the city (metro line 3, since December 2024) – not from Beijing South or West.

ToHarbin West哈尔滨西站

About 8 km south-west of the old Harbin station: metro line 3 to People's Square (人民广场), then line 2 one stop to Central Street (中央大街); a taxi takes about 25 minutes.

Good to know

  • Most trains end at Harbin West, but a few run on to Harbin station (哈尔滨站), two stops from Central Street on metro line 2 – if the times suit you, it's the easier arrival.
  • Keep a hat, gloves and a warm layer in your day bag, not in the suitcase: in January the average night-time low in Harbin is about −22°C.

Other ways: Flights (Beijing – Harbin HRB) take about 2 hours, but Harbin airport has no metro. Overnight Z and T sleepers from Beijing station take 10–12 hours.

On the way

North of Beijing the line crosses the Yanshan mountains near Chengde and the Liao River basin to Shenyang, then heads north through Changchun on the Harbin–Dalian line – opened in 2012 as the world's first high-speed railway built for extreme cold, with trains designed for −40°C. In winter the plain outside is white with snow.

When you arrive

Central Street, a 1.45 km cobbled pedestrian street laid out by the Russians in 1898, runs down to the Songhua River, and St. Sophia Cathedral (1932) is a 10–15-minute walk away. Ice and Snow World lies across the river, at its own stop on metro line 2: go in the late afternoon – in December the sun sets before 4 pm and the ice buildings are lit up after dark (adult ticket ¥328 in 2025/26).

Harbin to Beijing by train

Most trains to Beijing leave from Harbin West (哈尔滨西站), about 25 minutes by taxi from Central Street, and a few from Harbin station (哈尔滨站) – check your ticket. In winter allow extra time: snow and icy roads slow traffic, and it's better to wait in the heated hall than to rush. Almost all high-speed trains end at Beijing Chaoyang (北京朝阳站, metro line 3); overnight Z trains end at Beijing station (北京站). Times and fares are the same.
