Chengdu 成都
Capital of Sichuan: giant pandas, teahouses in the parks, fiery hotpot and an easy base for the mountains and Chongqing.
Chongqing 重庆
A hillside megacity on the Yangtze: the neon-lit Hongyadong, a metro line that runs through an apartment block and China's fieriest hotpot. A great start for Sichuan, with fast trains to Chengdu in just over an hour.
Beijing 北京
China's capital: the Forbidden City, the Great Wall within easy reach and hutong alleys with Peking duck. From here, high-speed trains take you to Xi'an and Shanghai.
Shanghai 上海
China's largest city: the colonial facades of the Bund, the Lujiazui skyscrapers and classical gardens. A great base for eastern China, with high-speed trains reaching Hangzhou or Wuxi in about an hour.
Guangzhou 广州
Capital of Guangdong and home of Cantonese cuisine: dim sum, the Canton Tower on the Pearl River and colonial Shamian Island. A great start for the Pearl River Delta, with fast trains to Shenzhen and Hong Kong.
Kunming 昆明
Capital of Yunnan, the “City of Eternal Spring” with mild weather all year, the Stone Forest and Dian Lake. The best base for exploring the province, with fast trains to Dali and Lijiang and on into the Tibetan mountains of Shangri-La.
