Stations
Show the Chinese name to your taxi driver.
Shanghai's main station, north of the centre – metro lines 1, 3 and 4. Trains to Suzhou also leave from Shanghai Hongqiao.
On the northern edge of the old town – about 2 km to the Humble Administrator's Garden; metro lines 2 and 4.

Good to know
- Check the station on your ticket: Suzhou station (苏州站) is next to the old town, while Suzhou North (苏州北站) is well north of the centre – about half an hour by metro line 2.
- At weekends and on holidays the gardens are packed – go on a weekday and be there at opening time.
Other ways: Buses and DiDi take about 1.5–2 hours, depending on traffic.
On the way
The ride is short and runs mostly through the suburbs and towns of the Yangtze delta – Kunshan is halfway – so there's barely time for a coffee.
When you arrive
From Suzhou station walk south across the moat towards Pingjiang Road and the Humble Administrator's Garden (about 20–30 minutes), or take metro line 4 into the old town. The classical gardens, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997, are best on a weekday morning.
Suzhou to Shanghai by train
Trains back leave from the same Suzhou station (苏州站) to Shanghai station or Shanghai Hongqiao – pick the one closer to your hotel. Times and fares are the same in both directions, and the last trains leave at about 22:30.
How to book

- Your passport is your ticket: you book with its number and scan it at the gates. Bring the same passport you booked with.
- Be at the station 40–60 minutes early: there is a security check at the entrance, and gates close a few minutes before departure.
- Big suitcases fit at the end of each carriage or on the racks above the seats.
