Chengdu to Jiuzhaigou by train

Since the mountain line opened on 30 August 2024, Jiuzhaigou is no longer a ten-hour bus ride from Chengdu: the train climbs through gorges and Tibetan villages in about two hours.

Stations

FromChengdu West or Chengdu East成都西站

Trains leave from Chengdu West (成都西站) or Chengdu East (成都东站).

ToHuanglong Jiuzhai黄龙九寨站

The station serves both Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong – it is about 1.5 hours by bus or shared taxi from the Jiuzhaigou park gate (Jiuzhaigou Kou, 九寨沟口).

Good to know

  • Book the onward bus or a shared taxi to the park gate a day ahead – your hotel can usually arrange it (about ¥40–60).
  • Stay in Zhangzha near the gate and enter the park when it opens; autumn colours (October) bring the biggest crowds.

Other ways: Flights go to Jiuzhai Huanglong Airport (JZH), but the airport is high in the mountains and flights are sometimes cancelled in bad weather.

On the way

The line climbs from the Chengdu plain into the Longmen Mountains, mostly through tunnels and over bridges; in between you get glimpses of gorges and Qiang and Tibetan villages.

When you arrive

The park ticket is about ¥169 plus ¥90 for the park bus in high season. Ride the bus to the top of the Rize and Zechawa valleys first, then walk the downhill stretches along the lakes – Five Flower Lake and Nuorilang Falls are the highlights. Inside the park the air is thin (2,000–3,000 m), so walk slowly.

How to book

  • There are only a handful of trains, and in autumn they sell out fast – set a reminder for the day tickets go on sale (15 days ahead).
  • Buy on Trip.com (English, foreign cards) or in the official 12306 app – tickets go on sale 15 days before departure.
  • Your passport is your ticket: you book with its number and scan it at the gates. Bring the same passport you booked with.
  • Be at the station 40–60 minutes early: there is a security check at the entrance, and gates close a few minutes before departure.
  • Big suitcases fit at the end of each carriage or on the racks above the seats.

Times and fares are typical values for second class, checked in October 2026. Fares are dynamic (peak trains cost more) and timetables change – check the live timetable on Trip.com or 12306 before you travel.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to visit Jiuzhaigou?

October for the autumn colours, though it's also the busiest month. Late spring and summer are quieter and the waterfalls are full; in winter the lakes partly freeze.
