Chongqing to Zhangjiajie by train
Since the new line through Qianjiang opened in June 2025, the fastest trains reach Zhangjiajie in about two hours – it used to take twice as long.

Stations
Show the Chinese name to your taxi driver.
The new station on the Chongqing–Xiamen high-speed line (opened in June 2025). Slower trains still leave from Chongqing North (重庆北站) and Chongqing West (重庆西站).
The high-speed station – about 10–15 minutes by taxi to the city and the Tianmen Mountain cable car, 40–60 minutes to Wulingyuan (the Avatar mountains).
Good to know
- Chongqing East is new and lies further from the centre than the other stations – check the transfer time from your hotel.
- Base yourself in Wulingyuan for the national forest park, and in Zhangjiajie city for Tianmen Mountain.
Other ways: Flights land at Zhangjiajie Hehua Airport (DYG), close to the city.
On the way
The new line crosses the mountains of eastern Chongqing and western Hunan on long bridges and through tunnels, with views of deep gorges and villages on the slopes in between.
When you arrive
From Zhangjiajie West it's about 15 minutes by taxi to the city centre and the lower station of the Tianmen Mountain cable car. Buy Tianmen tickets online in advance (with your passport number) and choose route A: cable car up, bus down. In the evening try Hunan food, such as the san xia guo pot (三下锅) and smoked pork (腊肉).
How to book
- Buy on Trip.com (English, foreign cards) or in the official 12306 app – tickets go on sale 15 days before departure.
- Your passport is your ticket: you book with its number and scan it at the gates. Bring the same passport you booked with.
- Be at the station 40–60 minutes early: there is a security check at the entrance, and gates close a few minutes before departure.
- Big suitcases fit at the end of each carriage or on the racks above the seats.
