Three weeks in China – 18–20 day itineraries
Three weeks is enough to cross China from north to south or east to west and see two completely different sides of the country in one trip: imperial Beijing and the Terracotta Army, followed by the “Avatar” mountains, Chengdu's pandas or Tibetan Shangri-La in Yunnan. We don't have a single three-week plan – you buy two separate itineraries, and we show you where to join them, which days to skip and how to get from one to the other. Every route below is one-way: fly into Beijing and home from Hong Kong, Chengdu or Kunming. They're all 18–20 days long, so with your flights they fit into roughly three weeks off.
From Beijing to Hong Kong in 20 days
Beijing → Tianjin → Xi'an → Chongqing → Zhangjiajie → Wulingyuan → Furong → Guilin → Yangshuo → Guangzhou → Shenzhen → Hong Kong

- ¥10,700 (about 6241 PLN) – ¥20,900 (about 12191 PLN)on the ground per person (budget – comfort, excl. flights)
Beijing and the Great Wall, Tianjin and Xi'an, then Chongqing, the Zhangjiajie mountains, a Li River cruise, Guangzhou and Hong Kong. The two itineraries meet in Chongqing, so there's no extra journey: skip the first two days of the second plan (you've already seen Chongqing) and take the train straight to Zhangjiajie.
How to join the plans: Emperors & Hotpot: days 1–9 unchanged (day 8 – train Xi'an → Chongqing, about 5–6 hours; days 8–9 – Chongqing, 2 nights). Day 10 of that plan (museum and departure) drops out. In From the Avatar Mountains to Hong Kong, skip days 1–2 (arrival and sightseeing in Chongqing – the same as days 8–9 of the first plan); day 10 of the trip is its day 3: the 9:00 train from Chongqing East to Zhangjiajie West, about 2–3 hours (slower trains from Chongqing North or West take 3.5–4.5 hours), ¥190–260. Days 11–20 = days 4–13 of the second plan, fly home from Hong Kong. No separate journey between the plans – they meet in Chongqing.

The classic golden triangle – Beijing, Xi'an and Shanghai with Ningbo – followed by western China: neon-lit Chongqing, Chengdu's pandas, the Leshan Giant Buddha and Mount Emei. Instead of flying home from Shanghai, you fly to Chongqing (about 3 hours) and start the second itinerary that same evening. Fly home from Chengdu.
How to join the plans: China's Golden Triangle+: days 1–10 unchanged (night 10 in Shanghai). Day 11 = day 11 of that plan and day 1 of Cyberpunk & Pandas: a short morning walk, then instead of flying home, a domestic flight from Shanghai (Hongqiao SHA or Pudong PVG) to Chongqing (CKG) – about 2 h 45 min–3 h in the air, usually around ¥450–700. Metro line 3 or 10 from the airport to the centre (45–60 min), then Hongyadong and your first hotpot in the evening. Days 12–18 = days 2–8 of the second plan, fly home from Chengdu (Tianfu). The train from Shanghai to Chongqing takes 9–12 hours, so flying makes more sense.
From Beijing to Yunnan's mountains in 19 days
Beijing → Tianjin → Xi'an → Chongqing → Kunming → Dali → Lijiang → Shangri-La → Kunming
- 19 days2 plans
- 118 PLNfor the plans (one-time)
- ¥9,750 (about 5687 PLN) – ¥19,100 (about 11141 PLN)on the ground per person (budget – comfort, excl. flights)
Beijing, Tianjin, Xi'an and Chongqing, then Kunming, the old towns of Dali and Lijiang, Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and Tibetan Shangri-La. Instead of flying home from Chongqing, you take a bullet train to Kunming (about 5 hours). Fly home from Kunming.
How to join the plans: Emperors & Hotpot: days 1–9 unchanged (days 8–9 in Chongqing). Day 10 = day 10 of that plan and day 1 of The Road to Shangri-La: in the morning, instead of flying home, a bullet train from Chongqing West to Kunming South – about 5 hours (G trains via Guizhou; the direct line via Yibin is still under construction), around ¥360–420 in second class. Or fly CKG → KMG, about 1.5 hours in the air, though with airport transfers it takes about as long. In the afternoon, Green Lake, the streets by the university and crossing-the-bridge noodles from day 1 of the second plan. Days 11–19 = days 2–10 of the second plan, fly home from Kunming.

Frequently asked questions
How much do 3 weeks in China cost?
On the ground, excluding flights to China, about ¥9,100–10,700 per person on a budget and ¥17,600–20,900 travelling in comfort – roughly ¥500 or ¥1,000 a day. That's the sum of the cost estimates in both itineraries, minus the repeated days, plus the journey between them. Add your flights to China and the two itineraries, which you buy separately. Full breakdown: How much does a trip to China cost?
Do I need a visa for 3 weeks in China?
It depends on your passport and your dates. While China's 30-day visa-free policy is in force, citizens of about 50 countries – most of the EU, the UK, Canada and Australia among them – can stay up to 30 days per entry, so three weeks fit. The policy has an end date and is extended by separate decisions, so check the current rules in our China visa-free guide before you book. US citizens aren't on the list, and the 240-hour visa-free transit covers only 10 days, so they need a tourist (L) visa for a trip this long. Hong Kong has its own entry rules.
Train or plane between the two itineraries?
It depends on the distance. The Beijing–Hong Kong route needs no extra journey, as both itineraries meet in Chongqing. From Chongqing to Kunming the bullet train is the easiest option: about 5 hours from Chongqing West to Kunming South (the flight takes about 1.5 hours, but you add airport transfers). From Shanghai to Chongqing, fly – it takes about 3 hours, while the train takes 9–12. You can book trains and flights on Trip.com with your passport number.
When is the best time to go, with several climates on one route?
April–May or October, avoiding the Chinese holidays on 1–5 May and 1–7 October. That's when both the north and the south are pleasant: in April Beijing averages about 21°C by day, Chongqing and Zhangjiajie 23–24°C and Guangzhou 26°C. Pack a warm jacket for Yunnan – Shangri-La drops to about 2°C at night in October. Avoid July and August, when daytime highs in Beijing, Chongqing and Zhangjiajie reach 32–34°C.
