3 ready-made routes · 27–29 days
One month in China – 27–29 day itineraries
A month is the best way to see just how varied China is: from imperial Beijing and the Terracotta Army to Shanghai's skyscrapers and Chengdu's pandas, and on to the stone pillars of Zhangjiajie, Tibetan Shangri-La or Hainan's beaches. We don't have a single 30-day itinerary – you buy three separate ones, and we show you where to join them, which days to skip and how to travel between them. Every route starts in Beijing and ends somewhere else, so you never retrace your steps. At 27–29 days they fit into a month off with flights, and within the 30-day visa-free limit if your passport qualifies and the policy is in force on your dates.

Frequently asked questions
Isn't a month in China too long?
Not if you don't try to see everything in a rush. Each of the three itineraries has its own rhythm: sightseeing days alternate with travel days, and the big cities get proper time – 4 days in Beijing, 2–4 each in Chongqing and Chengdu. A month lets you get to know four or five very different regions, such as the imperial north, Sichuan, the mountains of Hunan or Yunnan, and the subtropical south. If you'd like a different combination, we'll put together a custom plan.
How much does a month in China cost?
On the ground, excluding flights to China, about ¥14,050–15,950 per person on a budget and ¥26,750–31,150 travelling in comfort – roughly ¥500–550 or ¥1,000–1,100 a day. That's the sum of the cost estimates in the three itineraries, minus the repeated days, plus the journeys between them. The longest route, with Hong Kong and Macau, costs the most – a similar hotel room there can cost 2–3 times more than in mainland China. Full breakdown: How much does a trip to China cost?
Do I need a visa for a month in China?
It depends on your passport and your dates. While China's 30-day visa-free policy is in force, citizens of about 50 countries – most of the EU, the UK, Canada and Australia among them – can stay up to 30 days per entry (counted from the day after you arrive), so a 27–29 day route fits. The policy has an end date and is extended by separate decisions, so check the current rules in our China visa-free guide before you book. US citizens aren't on the list, and the 240-hour visa-free transit covers only 10 days, so they need a tourist (L) visa. Crossing into Hong Kong or Macau means leaving mainland China, and coming back counts as a new entry.
When should I go, with several climate zones on one route?
April–May or October, avoiding the Chinese holidays on 1–5 May and 1–7 October. In April Beijing averages about 21°C by day, Kunming 24°C, Guangzhou 26°C and Sanya 31°C. October is similar, though Sanya still gets plenty of rain. On the routes through Yunnan and Hainan, pack for several seasons: Shangri-La can drop to 1–2°C at night, while Sanya reaches about 31°C by day. Avoid July and August – it's hot in Beijing, Chongqing and Zhangjiajie, and typhoon season in the south.
