Sanya, China's tropics: is it worth it?

In short: Sanya is a resort city at the southern tip of Hainan Island, at roughly the same latitude as Hawaii. In winter it's 27°C during the day and the sea is about 24°C. It's worth it if you combine Sanya with a trip around China: 2–4 beach days at the end of a route through Guangzhou and Hong Kong, or a winter escape from the frost in Beijing. As a beach-only trip from Europe, Sanya usually loses to Thailand or Vietnam: you always have to change planes, resorts are expensive in high season, and the beaches are packed with Chinese holidaymakers. The best time to go is November to April, avoiding Chinese New Year.

What surprised us most in China was its diversity, and Sanya shows it like few other places: in the same country where Beijing freezes in winter, you swim in a warm sea under palm trees.

Correct as of October 2026. Prices, tickets and entry rules change, so check them at the source before you travel.

Is Sanya worth visiting?

Pros:

  • Warm when Europe is cold. From November to March it's 25–28°C during the day, and the sea is warm enough to swim all year round.
  • Easy to combine with the rest of China. You pay with the same Alipay, use the same apps, and the flight from Guangzhou, Shenzhen or Zhuhai takes about 1.5 hours.
  • Beaches for every taste. From the city promenade and bars on Sanya Bay to luxury resorts on Yalong and Haitang bays, and crystal-clear water around Wuzhizhou Island.
  • Food. Seafood straight from the market, chicken cooked in coconut water, and fresh coconuts on every corner.
  • Duty-free shopping. All of Hainan is a duty-free zone for people leaving the island, with huge CDF stores.

Cons:

  • It's far. There are hardly any direct flights from Europe. You'll usually connect in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou or Hong Kong, which is a long way to go for just a few days on the beach.
  • Crowds and prices during Chinese holidays. Over Chinese New Year and Golden Week (1–7 October) Sanya is bursting at the seams, and hotel prices multiply.
  • It's a resort built for Chinese tourists. Instead of wild beaches like in Thailand, you get resorts, promenades and shopping malls. English is mostly spoken in the big hotels.
  • Summer is the rainy season. From May to October it's hot and humid, and typhoons can hit from July to September.

Our answer: yes, if you're travelling to China in winter or early spring and want to end your trip with a few days on the beach. If all you want is a cheap break by a warm sea, Southeast Asia will be easier and often cheaper.

When to go to Sanya

SeasonWeatherNotes
November–April27–31°C during the day, dry, sea 24–27°Cthe best time; most expensive from December to February
Chinese New Year (6 February in 2027)as abovethe worst time: crowds, prices up to several times higher
May–October31–32°C, very humid, downpourscheaper and quieter, but typhoon risk from July to September
1–7 Octoberwarm, still quite rainyGolden Week: crowds from all over China

After the Lantern Festival, about two weeks after Chinese New Year, flight and hotel prices in Sanya drop by 30–50%. That makes March a good compromise: still warm and dry, but much cheaper than February. We cover the weather and holidays across China in our article Best time to visit China.

Which bay to choose: where to stay in Sanya

Sanya is a string of bays spread over a few dozen kilometres of coast. Choosing the bay is the most important decision, because it determines whether you can walk out for dinner in the evening or spend the whole stay at your resort.

BayWhat it's likeFrom the airport
Sanya Bay (三亚湾)a long city beach with palm trees and a promenade, beautiful sunsets, plenty of cheaper hotels15–30 min
Dadonghai (大东海)a small bay next to the city centre, lots of restaurants and shops, good for a first visit20–40 min
Yalong Bay (亚龙湾)a beach several kilometres long with white sand and the clearest water near the shore, chain resorts30–45 min
Haitang Bay (海棠湾)the newest luxury resorts, Atlantis water park, the biggest duty-free mall, close to Wuzhizhou Island40–60 min

Sanya Bay and Dadonghai are in the city, with restaurants on your doorstep, while Yalong and Haitang are resort areas further from the centre. If you want to explore and eat out, pick Dadonghai or Sanya Bay. If you're coming to rest after intense sightseeing, a resort on Yalong or Haitang Bay will give you peace and better water.

TipSanya's beaches are public and free, including on Yalong Bay, where hotels take up most of the shore. When you book, check that the hotel accepts foreign guests (more in our article Hotels, trains and flights).

What to see in Sanya: 8 places

1. Nanshan and the Guanyin statue in the sea

In the Nanshan Buddhist park (南山文化旅游区), a 108-metre statue of the goddess Guanyin stands on an artificial island, taller than the Statue of Liberty. There are also temples, gardens and a vegetarian restaurant. The park is big, so it's worth paying for the electric carts. Tickets are about ¥130 (about 75 PLN), and a taxi from the centre takes about 40 minutes.

2. Tianya Haijiao, "the edge of the sky and the sea"

A beach with huge granite boulders carved with the Chinese characters 天涯 and 海角. For Chinese people it's a symbol of travelling to the end of the world and of eternal love, so there are always plenty of couples here. Tickets are about ¥80 (about 46 PLN).

3. Wuzhizhou Island

Wuzhizhou Island (蜈支洲岛) in Haitang Bay has the clearest water in the area. It's the best place for snorkelling and diving on the reef. A ticket including the ferry costs about ¥140 (about 81 PLN), and it takes about an hour to get there from the centre, so set aside a whole day, or at least a morning.

4. Yalong Bay and the tropical forest park

Yalong Bay has the nicest beach in Sanya: white sand and calm, clear water. Above the bay is a tropical forest park (亚龙湾热带天堂森林公园) with a suspension bridge over the treetops and a view of the whole bay.

5. Luhuitou Park at sunset

A hill above Dadonghai with a statue of a deer which, according to legend, turned around and became a girl (鹿回头 means "the deer turns its head"). It has the best view of the city and the bays at sunset.

6. Diyi Shichang seafood market

At the Diyi Shichang market (第一市场) you buy seafood by weight, and a restaurant next door cooks it for about ¥15–30 per kilo. Agree on the price before you buy, both at the stall and at the restaurant. It's the cheapest way to eat lobster, prawns or crab in Sanya.

7. Yanoda Rainforest

Yanoda (呀诺达) in the hills north of the city is a real rainforest with waterfalls, trails and suspension bridges. A good change after a few days on the beach. It takes about an hour to get there from the centre.

8. Duty-free shopping on Haitang Bay

Hainan is a duty-free zone for people leaving the island. If you're 18 or older, you can buy up to ¥100,000 worth of goods a year duty-free: cosmetics, perfume, watches, electronics. The biggest store is CDF Mall (三亚国际免税城) on Haitang Bay. You usually collect your purchases when you leave Hainan, so you'll need your passport and ticket.

What to eat in Sanya

  • Coconut chicken (椰子鸡, yezi ji): chicken cooked in coconut water, served with a lime and chilli dip. Not to be missed.
  • Wenchang chicken (文昌鸡): poached chicken with rice. This part of Hainan is where "Hainanese chicken rice", famous in Singapore and Malaysia, comes from.
  • Qingbuliang (清补凉): a cold dessert with fruit, beans and coconut milk. Perfect in the heat.
  • Seafood from the Diyi Shichang market.
  • Fresh coconuts and tropical fruit: mango, passion fruit, jackfruit, and Hainan coffee to take home as a gift.

How much Sanya costs

Sanya is more expensive than most of China, especially in high season. Roughly, for a double room per night:

  • a simple hotel on Sanya Bay or in Dadonghai: from about ¥200 (about 116 PLN),
  • a good hotel or a cheaper resort: about ¥600 (about 348 PLN),
  • a chain resort on Yalong or Haitang Bay: usually ¥1,000 (about 581 PLN) and up.

In February the same rooms can cost up to 3 times as much as in September. Tickets: Nanshan about ¥130 (about 75 PLN), Tianya Haijiao about ¥80 (about 46 PLN), Wuzhizhou with the ferry about ¥140 (about 81 PLN), and the beaches are free. A taxi from the airport to Sanya Bay or Dadonghai costs ¥40–80. For the budget of a whole trip around China, see our article How much does a trip to China cost.

How to get to Sanya and get around

  • From Europe there are hardly any direct flights. It's easiest to connect in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou or Hong Kong.
  • From other Chinese cities: about 1.5 hours from Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Zhuhai, about 3 hours from Shanghai and about 4 hours from Beijing. Sanya Phoenix Airport (SYX, 三亚凤凰国际机场) is close to the city.
  • High-speed trains run all the way around Hainan. From Haikou in the north of the island to Sanya it takes about 1.5–2 hours.
  • Locally you get around by taxi or DiDi, because the bays are far apart. Enter your destination in Chinese. We explain how in our article China without Google Maps.

NoteHainan has its own visa-free policy. Citizens of 61 countries, including the US, the UK, Canada, Australia, Ireland and most of Europe, can fly to the island from abroad and stay up to 30 days without a visa, with no travel agency needed. The stay is limited to Hainan, but this policy has no announced end date, unlike China's nationwide visa-free entry, which currently runs until 31 December 2026. For US citizens, who aren't on the nationwide list, this is the simplest way to visit China visa-free. Details: China visa-free.

FAQ

Is Sanya worth visiting?

Yes, as a few beach days at the end of a trip around China, especially from November to April. As your only destination from Europe, it often loses to Thailand or Vietnam, because you always have to change planes, and in high season it's expensive and crowded.

When is the best time to visit Sanya?

From November to April: 27–31°C during the day, little rain and a sea of about 24–27°C. Avoid Chinese New Year (6 February in 2027) and Golden Week, 1–7 October.

Can you swim in the sea in Sanya in winter?

Yes. In January the water is about 24°C, roughly what the Mediterranean is like in June.

Do I need a visa for Hainan?

Usually not. Hainan has its own 30-day visa-free policy for 61 countries, including the US, the UK, Canada, Australia and most European countries, as long as you enter through a Hainan airport or port and stay on the island. Many nationalities can also use China's nationwide 30-day visa-free entry, which lets you travel around the whole country.

Which bay in Sanya is best?

For a first visit, Dadonghai or Sanya Bay, with restaurants and shops close by. For a resort holiday and the clearest water near the shore, Yalong or Haitang Bay.
